Jackson County was established in 1831 from parts of Mason, Kanawha and Wood counties and the new county was named in honor of the current United States President, Andrew Jackson. Part of Jackson was taken to form Wirt County in 1848, but a portion of this land was returned in 1853. Another portion of Jackson's territory was cut off to create Roane County in 1856. In 1867 a resurvey of the Jackson-Mason line saw a slight adjustment.
