Wirt County was created in 1848 from portions of Wood and Jackson counties. The new county was named for William Wirt, a Virginia lawyer who gained fame for his role in the prosecution of Aaron Burr for treason decades earlier. In 1853 part of Wirt was transferred back to Jackson. In 1863 a portion of Wood was ceded to Wirt. And in 1872 a small parcel of Roane County was added to Wirt.
