Map of Va: Roanoke CountyRoanoke County was formed in 1838 from the southern part of Botetourt County. It may have derived its name from the Roanoke River. In 1849 part of Montgomery County was cut off and annexed to Roanoke County. Finally, in 1851 a portion of Roanoke was taken away when Craig County was created.

ROANOKE COUNTY MARRIAGES, 1838-1850 John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr. 1984, viii, 54 pages, indices, figure, map. Roanoke County was the last (1838) subdivision of Botetourt County (formed 1770). The 350 marriage records were compiled from a copy of the county register in the Virginia State Library, Archives Division. Accompanying data includes: name of minister, his denomination, date of marriage and date of return to the clerk's office.
