Gilmer County was formed in 1845 from portions of Lewis and Kanawha Counties. The county was named in honor of Thomas Walker Gilmer, governor of Virginia from 1840 to 1841 and secretary of the navy in President John Tyler's administration. Gilmer was killed in an explosion on the USS Princeton in 1844. In 1856 the western lands of Gilmer were cut off to form Calhoun County and a part of Roane County. In 1863 a small parcel was added to Ritchie County to adjust the boundary line. In 1883 part of Gilmer was also added to Calhoun County.
