Taylor County was established in 1844 from portions of Harrison, Barbour, and Marion counties. It was named for John Taylor of Caroline, a United States senator. In 1856 another parcel was ceded from Marion to Taylor, and in 1863 several farms were transferred from Harrison to Taylor.
