Nicholas County Virginia

Map of Va: Nicholas CountyNicholas County was created in 1818 from parts of Greenbrier, Kanawha, and Randolph counties. The new county was named for Wilson Cary Nicholas, governor of Virginia from 1814 to 1816. The region was first settled in the decade following the American Revolution. In 1824 additional land was transferred to Nicholas from Kanawha with the resurveying of the boundary. Part of Nicholas was taken to form Fayette County in 1831 and in 1836 another parcel passed to newly-established Braxton County. Nicholas contributed to the forming of Clay County (1858), and to Webster (1860, 1863).

For a better understanding of county boundary changes, see our new section Virginia in Maps
