First established as a seaport community in 1752, the town was named for its counterpart English city of Portsmouth. Portsmouth was designated as a town in 1836 and as a city in 1858.
Portsmouth's municipal records date from 1858. For earlier records, see City of Chesapeake, the successor to Norfolk County.
