Dickenson County was the last county created in Virginia, formed in 1880 from portions of Russell, Wise, and Buchanan counties. The new county was named in honor of William J. Dickenson, a prominent public figure and delegate to the General Assembly when the county was formed. The county's boundaries have remained unchanged since its creation.
