Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog:
Independent City of Colonial Heights

Located in Chesterfield County on heights overlooking the Appomattox River. In 1781 the Marquis de Lafayette placed his artillerymen, known as the "Colonials" on these same heights to shell British positions in Petersburg. Hence the derivation of the town's name. Colonial Heights was established as a community in 1910, became a town in 1926, and was classed as a city in 1948. The city's court records date from 1961. For earlier records, see Chesterfield County.

For a better understanding of county boundary changes, see our new section Virginia in Maps
