Iberian Publishing Company's On-Line Catalog:
Independent City of Chesapeake

Named for the Chesapeake Bay, this merger of communities was established as a city on 1 January 1963. It was formed by the merger of the city of South Norfolk and the County of Norfolk (Norfolk county was formed in 1691 from Lower Norfolk County, which in turn had been created in 1637 by the division of New Norfolk County [created 1636]). The original parent county for all the above was Elizabeth City County. The records for both the City of South Norfolk and earlier Norfolk County are now housed in the municipal archives of the City of Chesapeake.

For a better understanding of county boundary changes, see our new section Virginia in Maps
