Carroll County was formed in 1842 from the eastern portion of Grayson County. It was named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland. In 1856 a part of Patrick County was also added to Carroll, extending the latter's eastern limits. There have been no changes since that date.
