Bland County was created on 30 March 1861 from part of Giles, Wythe, and Tazewell counties and named for Richard Bland, a Revolutionary leader in the colony. Its borders have remained unchanged save for a boundary adjustment in 1900. At that time all the land drained by the Dry Fork Creek watershed was transferred from Giles County into Bland.
